What a showreel costs in the UK, and where the money actually goes

Showreel pricing in the UK is all over the place, and almost nobody explains why.

So here are our numbers first, then what actually drives them.

What we charge

Everything in the first two rows is inclusive. Direction, lighting, sound, the edit, the colour grade, one round of revisions, and files sized for every casting platform. The full list is on sessions and pricing.

Where the money actually goes

Not the camera. Cinema cameras are cheaper to hire than most actors assume, and the sensor is not what makes a reel land.

The cost is the hour. Someone lighting each piece separately. Someone watching the performance rather than the timecode. Someone grading it afterwards so three speeches look like one film.

That's the whole point. A recording is cheap. A directed performance is not.

Manchester versus London

A comparable director-led session in central London typically starts around £450 and frequently runs past £700.

Same camera. Same grade. Different rent.

For anyone north of the Midlands that gap is larger than the train fare, which is why our locations pages exist at all. Actors travel in from Leeds in about 50 minutes, Liverpool in 35, and London in just over two hours.

Here's the honest bit though. If you are in London and money is not the constraint, film in London. The travel only makes sense because of the price difference.

What the cheap end leaves out

Sub-£100 reels exist. Usually one of these is missing:

• Direction — you get recorded, not directed, and you leave on whatever take the clock allowed
• Relighting between pieces, so a comic speech and a grief speech share one flat setup
• Proper sound, which is the fastest way to make good acting seem amateur
• A colour grade, so the pieces never quite look like the same film
• Revisions, so what you get is what you keep

None of that makes cheap wrong. It makes it a different product. Just know which one you are buying.

What about editing instead?

If you already have broadcast clips or short-film footage, a shoot may be the wrong spend entirely.

We quote showreel editing as a flat fee once we have seen the material, rather than running an hourly meter while we sift a hard drive. Often that is the cheaper and better answer.

The package option

If your headshot is also out of date, shooting both on one trip usually costs less overall and definitely looks more coherent. That is on headshots and showreel package.

Casting reads your headshot and your reel together. When they were shot eighteen months apart it shows.

Is it worth it at all?

For an actor with no usable footage, generally yes — a reel is the only part of a submission that shows you acting rather than describing it.

But a weak reel is worse than none. If the budget only stretches to something you would apologise for, wait and save. We will still be here.

What actors actually spend in a year

A reel is one line in a bigger budget, and it helps to see it against the others.

Casting platform subscriptions, headshot rounds, travel to auditions, class fees. Set against those, a reel that lasts two years is one of the cheaper recurring costs — and it is the one that unlocks the rest.

Which is also why we would rather you waited and did it properly than rushed something you would replace in six months.

Splitting the cost

If you are local, there is nothing stopping you filming one monologue now for a submission you need this week, and coming back for two more later.

Two £195 sessions cost more than one £295 hour, so it is not the cheaper route. But it is the more affordable one if cash flow is the constraint, and nobody should be told that is not allowed.

What the add-ons are actually for

The £49.99 promo cut is worth it if you use social professionally and useless if you do not. The £14.99 stills are useful between headshot rounds and are not a substitute for one — see headshots and showreel package.

Neither is required. Both are priced so you can say no without it being awkward.

If you have footage already, read updating a tired showreel before booking anything — an edit may cost you less than either session.
