This is a real trip and we will not pretend otherwise. Glasgow and Edinburgh are three and a quarter hours direct; Dundee is four and a half with a change; Aberdeen is five and a half by rail, which is why we tell people to fly.

Scotland also trains as well as anywhere in Europe. The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland is world class, the Citizens and the Lyceum produce serious work, and most of Scotland's television drama is made here. There is no shortage of local capability.

So the honest position: this trip makes sense if you are already travelling south for auditions, or if you want a reel that does not look like the other Scottish reels in the pile. If neither applies, film at home — we would rather say that on the phone than take the booking.

• Glasgow and Edinburgh: around 3 hours 15 direct on the West Coast route.
• Dundee: around 4 hours 30 with one change.
• Aberdeen: fly. The rail trip is 5 hours 30 and makes it an overnight.
• Best fit: actors already travelling south for auditions.
• We will tell you not to come if a single monologue is all you want — film locally instead.
• Glasgow — around 3 hours 15 minutes. Direct on the West Coast Main Line from Glasgow Central.
• Edinburgh — around 3 hours 15 minutes. Direct on the West Coast route via Carlisle, or via Glasgow.
• Dundee — around 4 hours 30 minutes. Via Edinburgh or Glasgow, one change.
• Aberdeen — around 5 hours 30 minutes. Via Edinburgh or Glasgow. Flights into Manchester Airport are often faster.
