Monologue Showreels

Do you need a showreel to get auditions?

Do you need a showreel to get auditions?

No platform requires one, but a profile without video is the easiest one to skip past. Casting shortlists inside the platforms and a reel is the only part of a submission that shows you acting rather than describing it. It will not fix a thin CV — it will stop a good one being ignored.

Strictly speaking, no. Nothing requires a showreel.

Practically, the absence of one is a decision you are making on behalf of every casting professional who opens your profile.

What actually happens without one

A casting assistant opens forty profiles against a brief. They are looking for reasons to shorten the list, because that is the job.

An empty video slot is the cheapest available reason. It is not personal and nobody deliberates over it — there is more on how that process runs in how casting directors actually shortlist.

So the question is not really "do I need one". It is "am I comfortable being filtered out before anyone has seen me act".

What a reel does

It is the only part of a submission that shows you acting. Everything else describes you.

A headshot says what you look like. A CV says where you have been. A reel says what happens when you are on camera, which is the only thing anyone is actually deciding about.

What it does not do

It does not fix a headshot that is four years old. It does not fill an empty CV. It does not make you right for parts you are not right for.

And it does not work on its own. If your profile is incomplete or your stills are poor, spend there first — that trade-off is covered in showreel or headshot first.

The case for waiting

Here's the thing nobody selling reels says often enough: a bad reel is worse than none.

No reel is a blank. A badly lit, badly cut one is evidence, and casting will draw a conclusion from it. If the only thing you can afford right now is something you would apologise for, save and wait.

We would rather you came back in three months than booked something you regret. That is a real position, not a sales line.

Who genuinely needs one now

SituationPriority
Graduating, no footageHigh — the window is narrow
Approaching agentsHigh — it decides whether they reply
Theatre actor moving to screenHigh — nothing else evidences it
Working actor, reel two years oldMedium — consider a recut first
Strong reel, thin CVLow — the reel is not the problem

If you are in the first row, starting from zero is the guide. If you are in the fourth, read updating a tired showreel before booking a shoot.

The cheapest useful version

One monologue, properly lit and directed, is £195 — a 30-minute session on sessions and pricing.

That is enough to stop being filtered out. It is not the whole answer, and we would not claim it is, but it changes the default from "skip" to "watch".

Students and recent graduates take 15% off through the drama students page, which brings it to £165.75.

Before you book

Read choosing a monologue, watch a couple of reels on the gallery, and check journey times on where we film if you are travelling.

Then call 0161 706 3220 or use the contact form. Tell us where you actually are — we will tell you whether a reel is your next move or whether something else is.

The short version

  • Nothing formally requires a reel. Everything informally rewards one.
  • It is the only asset that shows you acting rather than listing it.
  • It will not compensate for a stale headshot or an empty profile.
  • A weak reel is genuinely worse than none — this is not a numbers game.
  • If money is tight, fix the headshot first, then the reel.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get auditions without a showreel?

Yes, particularly through people who already know your work — a director you have worked with, an agent who has seen you on stage. What you will struggle with is cold submission, which is where most volume comes from.

Will a showreel get me an agent?

It is often what decides whether an agent replies. They receive far more approaches than they can watch, and a CV with no video attached is the easiest one to put down. It improves your odds; it does not guarantee anything.

Is a bad showreel worse than no showreel?

Yes, and this is the one part people underestimate. No reel is a blank. A bad one is evidence, and it is evidence of the wrong thing. If the budget only covers something you would apologise for, wait.

What if I only do theatre?

You still need one. Theatre casting increasingly self-tapes and shortlists from profiles, and any crossover into screen is closed without footage. A monologue reel serves both.

How often do I need to redo it?

When it stops looking like you or stops showing the parts you are up for — not on a schedule. Some reels last five years. Some need replacing in eighteen months because the actor changed direction.
