Where the listings actually live
For paid screen and stage work, breakdowns go out through casting platforms. Spotlight is the main professional directory in the UK, and it is where agents put their clients forward.
The other platforms carry a wider mix, including short films, student projects and fringe theatre that may never reach an agent.

Set your location filters to include the whole North West, not just the city. A lot of work is cast from Manchester but shot or staged elsewhere in the region.
Read each breakdown properly before you apply. If it asks for a playing age, an accent or a skill you do not have, skip it. Casting remembers the actors who submit for everything, and not in a good way.
The local routes people forget
Greater Manchester has several universities and colleges running film and media courses. Their students need actors every year, and those shoots are how many people get their first usable footage and first credits.
Fringe and new writing theatre is the other route. Go and see work at HOME, the Royal Exchange Theatre and Contact, and at the smaller rooms around the city.

What gets you from a listing into the room
Applying is the easy part. Being shortlisted is where most actors stall.
A casting team looking at a long list of submissions will open the profiles that let them judge quickly. A headshot tells them what you look like. Footage tells them whether you can do the job.

When the audition is a self-tape
A lot of first rounds now arrive as a request for a self-tape rather than an invitation to a room. You get the sides and a deadline, often a short one.
Keep some evenings loosely free when you are actively submitting. Short turnarounds are normal, and the actors who can get a good tape back quickly are the ones who stay in the running.
